Author and Commentators

George M. Wheeler (1842-1905). American army explorer and cartographer. He was born in Massachusetts, graduated from West Point, and became an officer in the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Wheeler surveyed the area west of the 100th Meridian. His last rank was Major.

Andrew Atkinson Humpheys (1810-1883). Graduate of West Point, Humpheys became an engineer and rose to the rank of Major General of volunteers and later was brevetted to the rank of Brigadier General of the Army. After the war, he became permanent Brigadier General and Chief of Engineers.

Gouverneur Kemble Warren (1830-1882). Graduate of West Point, Warren became an engineer and rose to the rank of Major General of volunteers during the Civil War. After the war he served as Major in the engineers, ultimately attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The Book

This book is Appendix F and contains page 481 thru 745. It deals with the geographical discoveries and explorations in the western United States from 1500 to 1800. It also contains explorations and surveys from 1800 to 1880.
