Biography of C. Crispi Sallusti
C. Crispi Sallusti Sallusti (86 B.C. -34 B.C.) was a Roman historian. He went with Julius Caesar to Africa in 46 B.C. to deal with Pompey’s supporters in the Civil War. Caesar then appointed Sallusti as governor of Numidia. Sallusti wrote a history of the war with King Jugurtha of Numidia. This took place 112 B.C. to 104 B.C. and involved Roman generals Marius and Sulla. Sallusti also wrote about the Cataline conspirary (uprising of Lucius Sergius Catilina in Rome in 1st Century B.C.).
Bartolomeo Liviano d’Alviano (1455-1515). Venetian general who fought the Holy Roman army in 1508 and defeated it.

Our Copy
Cover is vellum. Griffin printmark on title page. Decorated initial letters. The copy is underlined in many places. At the end of the book is the illustration of a griffin. On the back flyleave is hand printed the name “Gunlteriis Theodori Modaeus” and the date 1652 in Roman numerals.
Printer
Sebastian Gryphius (ca. 1492-1556) was born in Germany in the region of Swabia (or Suabia) but moved to Lyon to become a printer. He was noted for his pocket editions of books. He printed from 1528 to 1556 and was known for the quality of his work. His print mark was a griffin with the slogan “Virtute Duce, Comite Fortuna” (Under the guidance of valor, accompanied by good fortune).
