Authors and Commentators

Valerius Maximus lived during the reign of Tiberius (14-37 A.D.). He seems to have been a professional rhetorician. He wrote his book of historical anecdotes in which he recorded memorable deeds and sayings.

Josse Bade (also known as Jodocus Badius and Badius Ascensius) lived from 1462-1535. He was born in the village of Asse near Brussels but moved to Paris. He was a scholar who became involved in the printing industry and wrote commentary on several classical texts. He frequently worked in partnership with Jean Petit.

Olivier d’Arzugnano (fl. 1487) was a professor of grammar and a philologist

The Work -Memorable Deed and Sayings

His nine books dealt with categories of vice and virtue. He cited illustrative examples to be used by readers looking for such examples, such as students or orators. His examples included both domestic (Roman) and foreign (Greek) history.

Our Copy

Leather cover. On the inside cover is the ex libris “Rolle” with the motto “Nec rege, nec populo, sed utroque” (which means “Neither for king nor people, but for both.”) with heraldic symbols. Title page contains printmark of Jehan Petit and has handwritten notations on it. Throughout the book are decorated woodcut initial letters. Commentary was provided by Olivier d’Arzugnano and Josse Bade.

Printer

Jehan Petit (or Jean Petit) was a French printer and book publisher. He lived from 1492-1530. He had fifteen presses which he kept busy. He produced over 100 editions.
