Author and Commentators

Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836-1907). Born in New Hampshire, he became a prolific writer and poet. Aldrich also wrote for Atlantic Monthly and became the editor in 1881.

The Book

This book was published in honor of Aldrich’s seventieth birthday. Aldrich selected the 82 poems himself for the volume. Our volume is uncut. Aldrich’s signature at bottom of title page. The book was designed by Bruce Rogers. Approximately 113 pages. 430 copies issued. Blind-decorated green boards with gilt lettering.

Ex Libris on front flyleaf of Eugene Field. There is a handwritten note on the back flyleaf: “This copy was added to my father’s, Eugene Field, collection of first editions of Aldrich, in order to complete his collection.” Signed by Eugene Field II Sept. 2, 1923.

Eugene Field (1850-1895). Born in St. Louis, he became journalist. He wrote poetry, and is noted especially for his poems for children. One of his best known is Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.
