In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers and National Trails Acts, Christina Boston and the U.S. Forest Service present a special program celebrating America's wild and scenic rivers. A highlight of this afternoon’s milestone moment will be the reading of a poem by Vallejo Watershed Alliance member Elizabeth Wilkie. “We have learned to prize and protect these precious gifts; our children and grandchildren will come to know and love the great forests and wild rivers that we have preserved and left to them.” - President Lyndon Johnson

An African-American Perspective
Meet lifelong Vallejo resident, historian, researcher and humanitarian Sharon McGriff-Payne as she shares the observations, insights and inspirations that inform her work documenting and chronicling the African-American community. She is the author of “John Grider’s Century: African Americans in Solano, Napa and Sonoma Counties from 1845 to 1925”, and “African-Americans in Vallejo”. Her years of research have uncovered a trove of previously little-known details about family, employment, and the rich cultural life of Vallejo’s African-American community. In honor of her passionate commitment to community inclusiveness and equality, McGriff-Payne was recently named Solano County’s Woman of the year.

~A life in art...
Roberta Weir discusses her extraordinary life and remarkable career in art. Some highlights of her multi-talented adventures include: the publication in 1970 of her well-known image “Infinity” (the first colorized version of Flammarion); in 1991, Weir sculpted the bronze “Power of Woman”, commemorating the student strike that resulted in Mills remaining an all women’s college. 1998 saw the publication of her book Leonardo’s Ink Bottle, a popular work about art and perception. In 1987 Roberta founded the Weir Gallery (now maintained online as the Garcia Weir Gallery); where she introduced the work of Jerry Garcia, with whom she created many etchings and experimental prints, “The artist’s search for unique, meaningful expression....is mirrored in each of us.” Find more about the artist at: Garcia Weir Gallery.
